Singing
Woods Siri [March 21, 1982 to March 2, 1995] came home with me in
August of 1984. Her dam is Perry Greene Honey, and her sire is Perry
Greene Barrow. Listed on U.K.C.'s original United Kennel Club Purebred
Chinook list, she whelped (among others) Singing Woods Muskeg, a
frequent Chinook stud in the 80's.
Siri's
other claim to fame is that she's mentioned in Susan Conant's book,
Gone To The Dogs. In the Bantam paperback edition on page 138 a
character says of Chinooks, "They're so smart, and they really want
to please you. One time we saw one that'd been trained for obedience.
Utility? And this dog was really amazing." This passage refers to
Siri's demonstration of A.K.C. Utility competition at the Chinook
Round-up in Dayton OH in April of 1990.
She
was the first Utility trained Chinook (although she never
earned the title) and the first to achieve the titles of Companion
Dog and Companion Dog Excellent. She also did therapy work.
Margot Woods started a group called Phydeaux for Freedom,
to train physical assist and hearing assist dogs. The group
also visited nursing homes and hospitals with our personal
dogs. Siri taught me how to be a trainer and showed patience
with my inconsistencies. Her accomplishments make her a Chinook
"star" before many existed. Above all she changed my life,
because she taught me to love obedience.
